Mr. Matthew Hiett

Matthew D. Hiett is a Ph.D. candidate in Geography & GIS at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His dissertation, “Urban Morphology and Neighborhood Delineation in Chicago’s Real Estate State,” makes neighborhood boundaries the primary object of study, asking when neighborhood change is structured by urban morphology and when it is produced by political-economic processes. The project uses the Hierarchical Morphotope Classification (HiMoC) framework to derive boundaries from Chicago’s built environment and models how urban form and the real estate state co-produce outcomes at neighborhood edges. He holds a Master of Urban Planning from UIUC and a B.A. in Geography and History, summa cum laude, from Augustana College in Rock Island.
