Dr. Tiara Moore

Dr. Tiara Moore is a marine ecologist and the Founder and CEO of Black In Marine Science (BIMS). A Philadelphia native raised in Greenwood, South Carolina, Dr. Moore holds a B.S. in Biology from Winthrop University, an M.S. in Biology from Hampton University, and a Ph.D. in Biology from UCLA, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy.
In 2020, Dr. Moore launched #BlackInMarineScienceWeek to celebrate Black marine scientists and promote ocean literacy. What began as a social media movement has since grown into Black In Marine Science (BIMS), a global nonprofit with 680+ members across 35 countries, an international board of directors, and a full-time staff.
Dr. Moore’s research uses environmental DNA (eDNA) and community engagement to study nutrient pollution, algal blooms, and biodiversity loss while empowering impacted communities. She is a Principal Investigator on over $8M in NSF-funded projects advancing equity, data accessibility, and professional development in marine science.
A sought-after voice in ocean advocacy, Dr. Moore has been featured in Vogue, SCUBA Diving Magazine, Shark Week, and Google Arts & Culture, and was awarded the Ebony Magazine Power 100 STEM Trailblazer Award for her leadership in advancing innovation in STEM.
