Dr. Grey Magaiza
Professor Grey Magaiza is an Associate Professor at the University of the Free State (UFS), where he serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies (CGAS) and leads the Community Development programme on the QwaQwa Campus. His research focuses on rural and community development, sustainable livelihoods, social entrepreneurship, climate adaptation, community resilience and participatory development. His scholarship examines how communities navigate changing social, economic, environmental and spatial conditions, with particular attention to the agency, knowledge and adaptive capacities of rural and marginalised communities. His work is characterised by an interdisciplinary and place-sensitive approach that brings together theory, empirical evidence, policy and community knowledge.
He is particularly interested in how spatial inequalities, livelihood transitions, environmental change and institutional arrangements shape possibilities for sustainable and inclusive development. Through interdisciplinary and community-engaged research, he seeks to develop approaches that are both analytically rigorous and responsive to the lived realities of communities. His work contributes to broader geographical debates on rural transformation, livelihood resilience, climate adaptation, spatial justice and socially engaged scholarship, while advancing Community Development as a field concerned with transformative and locally grounded social change.
